sunnyside and lyndhurst
flew into white plaines for an excellent afternoon at washington irving's sunnyside and its near neighbor lyndhurst --- sunnyside was an excellent start to my excursion, beginning with the giant sycamore, 250+ years old and the amazing site right on the hudson -- the house, the core of which dated to the 1690s, was remodeled by irving as a sort of romantic folly, beginning in 1835 --- no photography on the interior, which is too bad since it's full of his stuff --- cozy little place
lyndhurst, less than half mile up the river, was begun in 1838, designed by alexander jackson davis, whose buildings were everywhere up there --- but its really the product of an expansion, also by davis, in the 1860s --- dark and gloomy interior but for the wonderful early tiffany glass all over ---
i skipped kykuit --- gotta save something for next time
