i'm glad that i didn't feel moved to spend much time at hyde park, since that made it possible to noodle around in the hudson river national historic landmark district ---  32 sq miles along the river north of hyde park, views of the catskills across the river, and including "four towns, four hamlets, two villages, over forty riverfront estates, and the designed landscapes, farmland, and distinctive natural features in between."  --- a cultural landscape in the making for 350 years
