cemeteries and post roads
the old dutch church (1685, although the windows were gothicized in the mid-nineteenth century) and its cemetery and the adjacent sleepy hollow cemetery make for an amazing place --- 300+ yr old grave stones and a cavalcade of monuments across steep hills encompassing 90 acres --- plus glacially grooved rock and rev war entrenchment
i followed u.s. 9 up the east side of the hudson and u.s. 5 down the west side of the connecticut river --- i'm not sure how many miles of earlier dirt versions of both roads, including a six mile segment of the old albany post road (ca. 1669), that i managed to find, although mostly all i had to do was look for signs that said, e.g., "old river road," so it didn't take too much sleuthing --- wikipedia claims the old post road to be the oldest unpaved road in continuous use in the county
and of course there are those who find unpaved roads inconvenient ---
