they called it rock mountain for most of the 19th c. before everybody decided to get all sophisticated and start calling it stone mountain--- this is a view of the north side of the mountain before it was defaced by that crazy confederate memorial--- from a bound report from the state geologist entitled granites and gneisses of georgia (1902)
