Templo Mayor

Unlike Teotihuacan, the so-called Templo Mayor, which was at the heart of the Sacred Precinct in Tenochtitlan. was ruined during the Spanish conquest. Construction work in the 1970s led to federal acquisition and clearing of the site --- serious archaeological investigation began in 1978. The presentation today shows aspects of five different construction campaigns beginning in the thirteenth century. Much of the Sacred Precinct remains un-excavated under the Catedral, Zocalo, and surrounding areas. Archaeology is ongoing, and among the discoveries were the remains of an ancient tree surrounded by a low stone wall, which was purty awesome.
