fort ancient

built in three stages beginning a thousand or so years ago, the earthworks are certainly ancient but were not built or ever used as a defensive fort --- national historic landmark and potential world-heritage site ---

it was overcast when i was there, and i almost had the place to myself --- would have stayed longer, but big rain moved in --- i'll go back when the leaves are gone

they also have one of the best museums i've seen --- toward the end a dark banner hung from the ceiling and was probably missed by many visitors --- its simple statements caught my attention
