restoring the everglades

woo-woo---florida's gov. charlie crist (who might be mccain's v.p. nominee if he didn't have to keep assuring the republicans that he's not gay) announced a deal to buy 187,000 acres or 300 square miles of land south of lake okeechobee from u.s. sugar corp., the nation's largest sugar producer, for $1.75 billion---u.s. sugar will farm the land for another six years then go out of business and semi-restoration of the river of grass can maybe proceed---it's a lotta money, the exact amount of which is still being appraised and yet to be appropriated by congress--- if you need a book to read, pick up The Swamp: The Everglades, Florida, and the Politics of Paradise by michael grunwald
