humboldt redwoods state park was founded in 1921, the first effort to preserve something of the vast redwood forests that were by then on the verge of being completely destroyed by logging --- at the founders tree is a  monument, dedicated in 1931 to three men who established the save-the-redwoods league in 1918 ---
