getting ready for the weekend
i was always too afraid of being outed on the teevee to go to the first parades, but anita bryant and the southern baptist convention changed that --- when i first participated in the late '70s it was more about just people marching and not floats and definitely not commercial sponsors --- it was a protest march that gradually morphed into a celebratory parade ---
the good christians at first baptist changed their service so they could be locked up and outta there before the march got that far --- the methodists at st. mark's across the street, on the other hand, were there almost from the beginning, passing out cups of water and being generally supportive ---today they still are, while the baptists are long gone --- go figure
