you know an atlanta native if they remember davison's---evolving out of a dry-goods store that opened in 1891, davison-paxon-stokes, or davison's for short, was rich's main rival---in march 1925, just as rich's was finishing the building where i now work, davison's was acquired by r.h. macy---it remained "davison's" until 1985 when the name was discontinued---in 1927 davison's opened its new store on peachtree street, designed by starrett & van vleck, of new york, and hentz, reid, & adler, of atlanta---it remained a downtown institution until it was closed in 2003---acquired by a telecom company, the interior disappeared from view and, in spite of assurances that it was still intact, i wasn't sure until today---they've uncovered some of the windows and apparently have started a big new marketing campaign to re-use the building----the picture is a little wierd since it's shot through plate glass, but you get the idea---it looks like it is still in excellent condition

checked out the new rottenwood creek "multi-use trail" this morning--- parallels the creek and I-75 parallels them both---- runs from the parking lot at paces mill to the one at akers mill--- i definitely like the old unimproved trails better--- the cyclists like the new one a lot---- the water in the creek is amazingly clear---

pretty great: two mockingbirds hopping around on my balcony railing, 13 floors up--first there was just one, and then another one joined him/her--- didn't stay long after the dog spotted them and started into his stalking routine---they're young, still a little brownish, and probably the offspring of the birds which were nesting down near the marta station and giving passersby so much grief----the only other time i've seen a bird out there was not long after i moved here and it, too, was a mockingbird---maybe one of the parents now----

You know the fight against marriage equality has been lost when even Bill O'Reilly has run out of legitimate reasons to oppose it. So has his guest Don Schweitzer who can't seem to come up with anything either, and he's against it!he doesn't even try to give reasons to oppose it---just keeps pushing for reasons from his guest that go beyond religion----"and you haven't shown us any tonight"----when o'reilly starts talking like that, you know for sure some stuff has changed----
in a city that's still very much suffering in the aftermath of Katrina, the URBANbuild program truly serving an important purpose in the community by creating in-fill housing in neighborhoods where it sometimes seems like every other home is still abandoned. It's helping to bringing back a density and sense of community while teaching students and introducing contemporary architecture (informed, of course, by the vernacular) to an area that's never really seen anything like it. This is really just a terrific program that keeps getting better every year.
