free friday

into the low 80s today, which was perfect for the stench of sidewalk fences full of confederate jasmine and  japanese honeysuckle wherever it could take hold

a morning at the state archives looking up land records and an afternoon in the park with the dog and a little writing in between has made for a more-or-less excellent day

anticipation

the buds are starting to crack

urban living

whenever i leave my door open, i usually wake up as the bars close down at 2, since there's always at least a couple of people that need to do some hollering --- but this morning it was just a big ol' mess on p'tree at 8th that warranted a rare 911 call from me --- a large number of [no doubt drunken] guys were fighting in the street and up and down the sidewalks --- noisy but no gunfire and they all ran before the cops could get there --- the wildly disparate groups of inebriated patrons (ga tech students, red necks from the suburbs, urban african americans, gay guys, e.g.) leaving the several bars at the same time almost guarantees an "incident"

sweet nothin's

my sweet pharmacist said, " i hope you don't take this the wrong way, but you really don't look your age. i had to double-check to make sure i had the right person."

how could one take that the wrong way?

i was entirely verklempt

streets alive! is coming sunday --- lose the cars and fill the streets with people and what not ---

12 May 2013

a spectacular spring day!

windy, temperatures in the 60s, down to the low 40s tonight! delicious weather at a time of year when too often it is already hot as hades
back and forth to fayetteville getting the last of any "stuff" that i wanted before mike calls in the estate-sale people ---

left flowers at the cemetery

new recipes

at first, guinness rejected the thug kitchen sweet potato treats, but i think he has acquired a taste for them (the mc solaar soundtrack was not intentional, but it sorta works)

a fine spring day

is this any more amusing when you can read the bumper sticker? "in buddha we trust"
juniper at ponce, with construction underway on both corners across ponce, with the new construction likely to effectively obliterate this view of downtown
i think i'm beginning to understand cattleyas --- this is a new one i've had about two months --- repotted it when i got it and all the fat new roots visible in the pot and the growth bud there at the right edge of the pot suggest that it is content with its little enivironment

picked up the nephew and drove to fayetteville to meet mike and my niece to make some semi-final decisions on the disposition of jcniris' non-human material remains --- we are about ready for the estate-sale people --- mike and i are both ready to be done with it

walking the dog

the paulownia next to bulldogs is blooming --- nice set of colors at sunset

07 May 2013

oncidium

it's a huge genus, 330 species, and these are great bloomers! both plants have a second flower spike on the way just as the first one is opening

sixth street

the street has definitely lost that homey feel

but i'm glad the sun finally came out today

06 May 2013

it's all unsettled

this is a really impressive storm when you think about it --- piles of snow to buckets of rain --- quite the storm for may

05 May 2013

orchids are magic!

this one has just started opening, the first blossom out of at least sixteen on that spike, but it's also started a second spike already, which it has never done before --- it must be happy

replacing a landmark

the u.s.41 bridge over the chattahoochee was built in 1936 as part of the state's first "dualized" (i.e., four-lane) highway, the existence of which had a lot to do with the decision to locate the bell bomber plant in cobb county --- after world war ii, lockheed re-developed the site --- the bridge is now being replaced, d.o.t. having proclaimed it "substandard" --- the new one doesn't have nearly the character of the old, but at least the guard walls are not solid

don't fall in, guinness!

04 May 2013

rain, rain, rain

as promised, it's been a very wet sa'rday ---

dog knows how to trap me in my chair --- he can concentrate on napping knowing he won't miss anything

big weather

snow as far south as arkansas this morning, having already set all kind of snow records in the upper midwest --- it's 50 here with 15 mph wind from the east, gusting to 30 --- we may get 5" of rain before it's over!

03 May 2013

spring chill

overcast and windy all day from the tail of winter storm "achilles," which has been a record-breaker in the midwest --- flood watch through the weekend here ---

the dentist is a terrible way to spend any morning, and this one was no different as i endured needles and scrapers and shit --- always gives me flashbacks to dr. fitzgerald in east point in 1958, with all of his belt-driven drills and other medieval hardware ---

the new apartment building at 12th&midtown is all glassed in ---

02 May 2013

an early weekend

a snow storm in the plains and in the 60s here all day, won't get out of the 50s on saturday --- purty awesome weather for may

01 May 2013

spring garden

"imaginary worlds" preview opening this evening --- really nice at twilight

the pitcher plants in the bog garden are in full flower right now
