the skyline

a fine summer day in atlanner --- unless i'm mistaken, the third building at the "12th and midtown" development has topped out --- this will be the skyline for the next few years

nightmare

As the months have gone by since John McCain revealed his total cynicism and contempt for America's national security by selecting one Sarah Palin to be a potential vice-president of the United States, we have learned that every single ghastly attribute we discovered in the campaign is worse than we thought at the time.

read the whole thing and then just pause for a moment and really think about it: president sarah palin

i think the lake is having some water-quality issues

going, going, gone

what's up with all the 50-year-olds dying all of a sudden?

remember stonewall

Action would be even better. It’s a press cliché that “gay supporters” are disappointed with Obama, but we should all be. Gay Americans aren’t just another political special interest group. They are Americans who are actively discriminated against by federal laws. If the president is to properly honor the memory of Stonewall, he should get up to speed on what happened there 40 years ago, when courageous kids who had nothing, not even a public acknowledgment of their existence, stood up to make history happen in the least likely of places.
and obama ought to remember his campaign promises

dust to plastic

i told robert today that michael jackson could wind up on permanent display under glass--- sure enough: he's going to be "plastinated"

Von Hagens said that he spoke with representatives of the Jackson family 'many months ago' and it was agreed that his body will be plastinated and placed next to Bubbles, his late pet monkey who was plastinated a number of years ago and is exhibited at The Body Worlds & Mirror Of Time exhibition at the O2 Centre in London.

mississippi

it is a very special place, although it's largest city is not much to look at from the air --- i was just there overnight which was good, not only because it was mississippi, but it was also ultra-humid and in the mid nineties

art from a moving sidewalk

usually i can get to the airport in time to walk to the first concourse, mainly because of the excellent permanent exhibit of sculpture from zimbabwe---actually i like most of the airport art is good, especially the giant fire ants at baggage claim

revolutions and technology

Iran's major social movements have always depended on cutting edge communications because of the size of the country (nearly 4 times the size of France) and the way its population is separated by mountains and deserts. The telegraph was important to the 1890-92 revolt against a tobacco monopoly granted by Nasir al-Din Shah to a British freebooter, which harmed Iranian merchants and farmers. The 1979 revolution was fueled by cassette tapes of the sermons and speeches of Imam Ruhollah Khomeini. And now we have twitter.

and all paul revere had was old lamps in bell towers

iran

not too many years ago, with a situation like that in iran, nobody outside that country would have any idea what was going on---but throughout the last few days images and short reports flood out of the country via intermittent cell phone service, twitter or whatever----the govt is confiscating satellite dishes, smashing computers, etc., but iran is too rich and too sophisticated for that to be totally effective---watch the woman at the end of this vid getting beat to the ground but getting right back up and continuing to raise hell

12 June 2009

just another politician

obama campaigned on promises to advance the civil rights of gay americans----we still can't serve openly in the military and now his dept. of justice is going out of its way to defend doma? what is he thinking? depressing
