the atl twins

the sewell twins, a.k.a., the atl twins, are on the cover of this week's creative loafing --- i posted a video a while back, rolling stone ran a piece on them, and there was the initial nasty interview in vice magazine --- i joked about them being cousins, but sure enough they are, sort --- half sixth cousins, once removed to be precise ---

all of the sewells in the georgia piedmont are descended from samuel sewell (1715-1789) and one of his two wives, which is where the half-cousin thing comes from --- samuel's g-grandpa henry sewell was one of the early settlers in virginia, dying there in 1634 --- the norfolk navy base is at sewell's point, which was named for him --- samuel was born in maryland but the family moved to rowan county in the north carolina piedmont around 1760 --- at least nine of samuel's children moved on to georgia after the revolution, settling first in franklin county in northeast georgia and on into coweta county in the western piedmont in the 1840s ----

the twins' g-g-g-grandparents moved to coweta co around 1845, and three or four generations are buried at macedonia baptist church north of newnan -- sewell mill road is the road that runs out to the southwest from roscoe and is no doubt named for one of their ancestors ---- the twins' sewell grandparents apparently moved to chattanooga in the 1930s, perhaps to work in the mills --- they both died and were buried in chattanooga ---

and that's where the sewell twins came from
