volcanoes!

black butte, "a cluster of overlapping dacite lava domes in a . . . parasitic satellite cone of Mount Shasta," is a grim little mountain sitting right next to the 5 near weed --- without a good hike (which i was unprepared to do alone), shasta itself is observed only in grand isolation --- a stratovolcano over 14,000 ft high, it is thought to have last erupted in 1786 ---

chaos crags and snow-capped lassen peak, which last erupted in 1917 --- southernmost of the volcanoes in the cascade range and largest plug-dome volcano in the world --- at the southern end of the volcanic heritage scenic byway, which begins around crater lake in oregon and ends around lassen
