exploring atlanner

dog and i had an excellent walk this morning through frazier forest, 30 acres of woodland that was once part of the cator woolford estate --- then through the gardens and across ponce to deepdene park this morning --- trails winding through magnificent poplar and oak along branches that form peavine creek --- deepdene, on ponce at east lake drive, at the eastern end of druid hills,  was one of the original olmsted parks, and was kept in a natural state as a sort of counterpoint to the idyllic meadows of the other parks along ponce --- it was long a mess, over-run with english ivy and privet, but eight or ten years ago, it was throughly rehabilitated and is truly a delight --- walk it some sunday morning when the traffic on ponce is light

neither the forest or the park are really "old growth" --- all the forests that originally covered the piedmont were logged out in the nineteenth century, except for remnants like these that somehow survived
someone actually cored this white oak in deepdene in 2011 and counted around 240 growth rings --- it was growing during the revolution!
back and forth across the branch over stepping stones --- although dog doesn't mind sloshing across

the city's champion redbud tree is just right of center
and the house built by cator woolford in the 1920s -- he and his brother founded the retail credit company, which became equifax in 1976
