cascade
dog and i took a break and searched out the state champion sourwood tree down at cascade nature preserve this afternoon --- recorded as 6'-2" in diameter, 99' tall, and 38' crown spread --- it was purty great, but there were many other big trees
including this one
the spring house remains an absolute marvel, and one of my favorite structures in the city --- next time i should go prepared to clean it out ---
turkeyfoot creek enters the preserve through a great arched culvert over which cascade road passes --- it was built of stone, probably in the early 1900s, and replaced what must have originally been a natural ford on the ancient sandtown trail --- i think the series of three cascades in the creek just south of the road is the origin of the community's name, cascade, which was in use as early as the 1880s
i just finished a major edit of a truly dreadful wikipedia entry for "cascade heights" --- i've never seen anyone else mention the turkeyfoot creek falls as the origin of the name ----
