king cotton

Whitney -- a nephew several times removed  of cotton gin inventor Eli Whitney  -- found there is less use for businesses like his in the place where cotton was once king.Whitney's great-grandfather, his grandfather and his father were in the cotton business of marketing cotton for the farmers who grew it. But now, 142-years after S.M. Whitney Co. opened in Augusta, it is closing.
the king is dead; long live the king, whatever it is these days
